- Our Firm
This is the Berend home in downtown Steamboat Springs. My wife Heidi and I bought our house in 1990 BC (before children). Two children and 10 years later, we needed more space, a garage, and a new master bedroom. We also wanted a floor plan that took advantage of our spectacular views and southern exposure with more outdoor living space. At this point most people would find a new house, not us! Renovators at heart, we felt we had such a precious lot and very special neighbors, we chose to re-create our home.
Our kitchen was a small galley in the core of the house with only one small window. We wanted to move this room to the front of the house, with a bank of windows viewing southwest towards Howelson Hill. We now have afternoon tea in the kitchen while watching the kids walk up the street from school.
Originally our bedroom was in the front of the house on the third floor. Heidi disliked the noise, which sometimes would carry up the hill from town. We therefore situated a new master bedroom\bathroom suite in the back of the house. This room is away from the street noise and communicates with the tranquility of our back yard.
Other benefits of our remodel are a wonderful, oversized garage with private deck above. This deck is perfect for dining in the summer as it is just off the kitchen and dining room. On the lower level, next to the garage, the entrance to our house flows into a large mudroom. Big mudrooms are a prerequisite for the ever-active Steamboat family! Next to this mudroom, another mandatory item for many Steamboat families is the "sports closet" with double doors facing the driveway….this is where the raft, kayaks, bikes, sleeping bags, camping gear and other Steamboat essentials are stored. I have to admit, this is one of our most useful rooms!
